Live Science Shows

Discovery Centre takes science to a whole new level with our hair-raising, flame-throwing, ice-cold live demonstrations performed every weekend in the Theatre. Times are subject to change. Please call ahead for show times or consult the programming board upon your arrival.

Our Live Science Shows

Great Balls of Fire

Let the trained staff at Discovery Centre show you a whole new scientific way to approach fire. We are going to take a visual odyssey through the fire triangle. This show is designed to explain fire and the elements that combine to make it possible.

Ecstatic Electricity

The Van de Graaff Generator is used to illustrate principles of electrostatic electricity. The current is limited to a few micro amperes making the generator perfectly safe. This demonstration also illustrates the relationship between “like” and “opposite” charges. Flying pie plates and bouncing cotton balls help make this a “hair raising” experience to see.

Bed of Nails

This award winning demonstration is very visual and dangerous-looking. However, this age-old act of lying on a bed of nails can easily be explained by science. This demo illustrates the relationship between surface area and pressure. There are also a couple of points made about potential and kinetic energy, which has some very smashing results. The number one crowd-pleaser at Discovery Centre.

The Big Chill

With this demo we explore the realm of cold and what happens to things when they get cold. We look at solids, liquids, and air. We use visually appealing demos to illustrate what becomes of these things when they are exposed to extreme cold. Colder than the coldest place on this planet, liquid nitrogen will be used to flash freeze a flower, turn a banana into a hammer and many more demos designed to chill the hearts of both young and old.
