Starry Skies
Every Wednesday and Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. during the month of February we’re offering our out-of-this-world program – Above and Beyond – which takes place inside our digital inflatable planetarium.
Step into the immersive world of starry skies for a one-of-a-kind introduction to astronomy. While gazing up at the stars, earn how to identify asterisms, constellations, galaxies and more in the Discovery Centre’s most popular program ever!
Reel Science Film Competition
Grade 4 to 6 classes are invited to submit their short films to the Discovery Centre’s Reel Science Film Competition. Films must be between three and five minutes, and must explore science curriculum topics. The top three films, as chosen by our judging panel, will be screened at a special event at the Discovery Centre. Cash prizes will also be awarded. NEW this year – the winning film will be featured at the ViewFinders Film Festival.

DISCOVER the RAIN
Community Partnership
Join students from Highland Park Junior High on Saturday, February 23 from noon to 3:00 p.m. as they present their Space Lab at the Discovery Centre. Students – Jamie Simmonds, Alexander Lamey, Aleiaj Papa, Claire d’Entrement and Mackenzie MacDonald – will share two videos they recently entered in an international YouTube contest. The videos are of science experiments pertaining to the International Space Station. One zeroed in on the challenges astronauts face in getting a good sleep on the space station and the other looked at the challenge of slowing down the aging process in space.
The Dalhousie Satellite Design Team motivates and inspires pre-university students to pursue post-secondary education, particularly in science and engineering. Join them at the Discovery Centre on Saturday, March 3 for an interactive 45-minute floor program at 12:00pm and 2:00pm!
Hope for Wildlife, a non-profit charitable organizations committed to connecting people with wildlife in a positive way – through knowledge and understanding, will be visiting us on Saturday, March 17 at 1:00 p.m. Join this engaging speaker session to learn more about the society and how they care, treat and rehabilitate injured, orphaned mammals and birds. *Please note that seating is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The Canadian Diabetes Association & Discovery Centre present two exciting and interactive workshops on Saturday, March 10. The first presentation takes place at 1:00 p.m. and is geared towards teaching children six to nine-years-old more about diabetes. The second presentation takes place at 3:00 p.m. where tweens to teens will be educated on the seriousness of diabetes and the importance of healthy, active living.
Registration is not required. Participants will be admitted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Free with same day Discovery Centre general admission. Children and youth must be accompanied by a guardian at all times.
