Internal Education Programs

Our Internal Science Program is all about hands-on, minds-on learning that gives students new knowledge, a feeling of accomplishment and a sense of wonder at the world of science! We offer two types of curriculum-based programs – Science Workshops and Science Shows.

Workshops are designed in consultation with provincial educators and have specific curriculum links. Most workshops are between 35-45 minutes in length unless otherwise stated. We require a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 25 students per workshop.
View our workshops here.

Science Shows are where the oohs and aahs really happen! They feature a high-impact demonstration that brings science to life in the most dynamic way with student interaction and links to the Nova Scotia curriculum. Shows are approximately 45 minutes in length. We require a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 50 students per science show.
View our science shows here.

Not interested in the programs? No problem! Your class is welcome to the Discovery Centre for a class visit – no workshops or shows required. Discovery Centre class visits provide unlimited opportunity for students to explore all three floors of our interactive permanent and temporary exhibits, where students will encounter a variety of curriculum-links imaginatively intertwined in disciplines such as physics, engineering, chemistry and biology. High-definition, science-based films are included in the costs of admission. We guarantee a visit to the Discovery Centre will be challenging, engaging and educational!

Workshops

Sensational Senses – Grade P-1

Smells like science and feels like fun! Curriculum for early years focuses on kids exploring the world with their senses – and this workshop does just that! We challenge kids to take a look at each sense and understand how they work independently and together. This workshop smells like fun!

  • Exploring the world with our senses (Grade Primary)
  • Materials, objects and our senses (Grade One)

Once Upon a Worm – Grades P-2

Experiment with live worms and discover their importance in our everyday lives. See what they eat, how they move and feel them crawl through your fingers.

  • Exploring the world with our senses (Grade Primary)
  • Needs and characteristics of living things (Grade 1)
  • Animal growth and changes (Grade 2)

Water, Water Everywhere – Grade 2

What’s up with water – and does it always come back down? Come dive into the hard facts about ice, steam and everything in between as we get caught up in the wonder of the water cycle.

  • Liquids and solids
  • Air and water in the environment

Bridging the Gap – Grade 3

What goes up must come down – unless we hold it there! Why are structures shaped as they are? Can old newspapers support weight? This building workshop will challenge students to Bridge the Gap.

  • Materials and structures

No Strings Attached – Grade 3

May the force be… magnetism or static electricity? Invisible forces are all around us and sometimes they are difficult to see. In this program students will be attracted to what they can learn on a hair-raising visit to Discovery Centre.

  • Invisible forces

Sounds of Science – Grade 4

If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around, does it make a sound? Discover the answer as we follow the journey of sound from transmitter to receiver and everything between. Good vibrations guaranteed!

  • Sound

Facts of Light – Grade 4

Look around and what do you see? Light in all of the colours of the rainbow! But are there colours we can’t see? And where do they come from? At the Discovery Centre, we’ll help illuminate the facts of light.

  • Light

Cast the Past – Grade 4, 7

The past comes to life in this palaeo-program. Touch real fossils, learn how they’re formed and exposed and find out how organisms adapt and change through geologic time. Each student will use a chemical reaction to create their own fossil replica to take home. *Please note – this workshop is 60 minutes.

  • Rocks, minerals and erosions (Grade 4)
  • Earth’s crust (Grade 7)

Green Machines – Grade 5

Join us for a spot of gardening as we make use of six simple machines. From wedges to pulleys these are the original green machines.

  • Forces and simple machines

NEW! Capture the Wind – Grade 5

Unleash the power of the wind in this exciting new workshop that examines this renewable resource. Find out how we can farm the weather and why wind may be the energy of the future.

  • Forces and simple machines/Weather

Electric Odyssey – Grade 6

Zap! Discover the power of electricity in this hair-raising workshop. Investigate static and current electricity as well as the relationship between electricity and magnetism. Lights on!

  • Electricity

NEW! Lunar Bots – Grades 6, 9, 10, 11, 12

In Discovery Centre’s version of mission control, this hands-on, minds-on workshop allows students to go from the classroom to the moon! Using space robotics as a guide, students will be introduced to computer programming using LEGO NXT technology. Students will learn how to control a space robot by sending signals via Bluetooth to accomplish simple movements, including their final mission – collecting samples from a lunar landscape. Please note – this workshop is 90 minutes and has an additional cost.

  • Space (Grade 6)
  • Space Exploration (Grade 9)
  • Scientific technological inquiry (Grade 10, 11 & 12)

Mysterious Mixtures – Grade 7

Are mixtures a mystery? Do you think pure substances are a struggle? Get them straight while you explore different separation techniques and find out what’s in the mix.

  • Mixtures and solutions

Fluid Dynamix – Grade 8

Ever wonder how a submarine can surface and dive, or why oil and water don’t mix? In this hands-on workshop, students will analyze different fluids for viscosity and discover the relationship between density and buoyancy.

  • Fluids

All’s Cell That Ends Cell – Grade 8

Discover what’s really inside our insides! Compare and contrast plant, animal and human cells (your own) while learning how to use a microscope.

  • Cells, tissues, organs and systems

Ready, Set, React – Grade 9

Perform a series of experiments to observe what can happen when substances are mixed together. Then use these observations to explore the difference between physical and chemical reactions.

  • Atoms and elements

pHenomenal Chemistry – Grade 10-12

Save yourself from boiling cabbage juice and come explore the pH scale at Discovery Centre. How do substances sit along the scale? What are the pitfalls of measurements? We’ll even take chemistry’s most tedious experiment – the titration – and make it pHenomenal!

  • Chemical reactions

NEW! Genes: Unzipping The Future – Grade 10 -12

Ever wonder what the big deal is about genomes? How is it that biologists can put it all together (literally) from nothing but a swab from your cheek or a strand of hair? Join us for some scientific sleuthing as we sort out if DNA is just a string of letters or the holy grail of biology. Please note – this workshop is 60 minutes.

  • genetic conditions, Grade 9:
  • genetics and genetic engineering
  • social issues related to the applications of science and technology (grades 11, 12)
  • interaction of science and technology (grades 11, 12)
  • reproduction of representative organisms (grades 11, 12)

Science Shows

Above and Beyond - Grades 1, 2, 4, 6, 9

Step into the immersive world of starry skies in our digital inflatable planetarium for a one-of-a-kind introduction to astronomy. While gazing up at the stars, students will learn how to identify asterisms, constellations, galaxies and more in the Discovery Centre’s most popular program ever! Please note – this program is available only during October, December, February, April and June.

Climate in Jeopardy – Grades 4, 5, 6, 8, 10
